I am doing a mystery quilt through the internet. It is called Carolina Christmas from Bonnie K. Hunter using scraps. I am still trying to choose my fabrics. I can't decide if I should use green/blue/yellow/neutral or red/green/yellow/neutral. Maybe you can help me decide I have my three choices pictured here. Can you let me know what you think?
Also, I am not sure how important it is to have a 2 yard piece tying the colors together. As you can see I only have one 2 yard piece, the rest are all scrappy. Does it matter?

Hi! I'm thinking about doing Bonnie's mystery as well and am pondering my fabric choices as we speak. I think the point of having the 2 yard length of a single fabric is to give your eye some places on the quilt to rest. If the entire quilt is scrappy it can get a bit busy but that said there are no quilt police and no rules so go with the colour you like best!
Hi! I'm doing the Quiltville mystery too. It's just my opinion, but I like to have one of the colors as a planned fabric instead of scrappy. I think it gives a little cohesion to the design and helps the eye to see the repeated design in the scrappiness. I figured that's what Bonnie was going for too. In the last two mysteries, she used a single fabric for one of the colors. If you did the gold scrappy, I would choose the fabrics to be fairly close in value. Example - use the darker yellows on the right of the photos, and keep them fairly close in shade. And, I think the blue/yellow/green is striking and would make a very nice quilt. Bonnie's quilts are scrappy, the more the merrier. As long as you have contrast and can tell which colors are where, it will work.

I like every one of your combinations. I think they will all make a great quilt. Each photo shows enough of a contrast with the colours and that is the main thing. I would take out the one very light fabric in the gold/yellow pile in the 3rd photo because it is very light.
Just pick whichever combination makes you feel happiest when you look at it and start cutting!
I love your blues, greens, golds, and neutrals. They should work great for the Carolina Christmas.

I've been pulling fabrics, too and the only "single piece" of fabric ( meaning 2 yards worth ) that I have is for the background - it's a very tiny flowery thing that pulls my colors together ( golds, greens and tans )

Thanks Calico, I think I need to play with my fabrics again or go to the fabric store. I also like the blue/yellow/green, but don't have a 2 yard piece to play with in those colors. Do you think I should go to the store and get a dark yellow? I've been trying to avoid that since our finances are a bit tight.

Do you have enough of dark/medium yellows to make up 2 yard? I think it would work to make the yellows scrappy if they are close in intensity. If you discarded the two yellows on the left in the picture, the marble and the check, and maybe the blue/yellow stripe, the rest would "read" close enough together to be cohesive. I hope you don't have to go shopping - fabric is getting so expensive. If you need to buy more, have you ever shopped at www.thousandsofbolts.com? They have a great selection and it's discounted! Usually $3.95 to $4.15 a yard. It's one of my favorite stores. No affiliation, etc, but I wanted to pass along this fabric source so you could save some money if you decide to buy more of the dark yellow.

I like your green and blue combo best. I think it will be fine without one same color throughout...the fabrics you have chosen seen quite cohesive themselves, esp. the creams...they are going to read the same in the quilt and they will work.

I don't think you need to have one constant. Your fabric choices look fairly "same", so I would not worry. I like the one with the blue, but am not sure how much contrast to the green it would give.
