This is a satin lei that I made for my daughter's graduation on June 7, 2008. I'm not sure if I'll ever make another one because it involved so much time and work.
It was very labor intensive. I had to cut the fabric into 2-inch strips by pulling the thread to make a cutting line. After the strips were cut, they needed to be shredded. I left a 1/2" of unshredded fabric down the center where I sewed a 1/4" running stitch. After sewing the running stitch, I pushed the fabric together and twisted it.
I started the lei in January and got done with it right before graduation in June.

I used the thinner satin to make the lei. I think if I ever make another one, I will use either 1" or 1-1/2" strips...it might not take as long. Are you going to make one? Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Suze, That is a beautiful lei! I agree, a satin lei is extremely labor intensive, though the end product is such a meaningful gift. Do you mind if I ask how you were able to create the two color effect? I have only ever made them in one color. Also, do you have any tips for fraying the 2-inch strips? That seems to be the most tedious part! Thanks!
I put the two different colored strips together after they were shredded and sewed them at the same time. I don't know how you shred yours, but a pin worked to help separate the threads. I hope this answers your question.
