I had a platter of sashimi with crab and a large salad.

The unagi came in a dish donburi style. I heard it was delicious!
Found this old picture in my files of the time we went to see Wicked at the Neal Blaisdell Center. After I took this picture, I found out that we weren't suppose to take pictures. I loved the show! It was the best Broadway show I've seen so far. One of the main characters in it was from Hawaii, which made it better.

The next two pictures are of Christmas gifts I made and have since given, since the last time I posted. A Christmas stocking for my nephew, hot pads and coasters form my mom. My nephew used to like to play with the hot pads and coasters.

The first is of the train system. Boy, talk about extensive and confusing! Even those who live there use an app to travel on the trains. We rode the subway and the other trains. The only train we did not ride was the Shinkansen or bullet train. The hardest part was not being able to understand some of the operators when they announced which stations we were approaching, because they mumbled! Luckily, most of the trains had the names of the approaching stations above the doors and most of the people were very nice. I was even able to communicate with them using my broken Japanese.

We went exploring the next day and found a supermarket in the Tobu Store near our hotel. Yay! All the vegetables were neatly packaged. We also found sashimi, hot food, etc. It kind of reminded us of Shirokiya here. There was even a guy cooking sweet potatoes on the hot rocks!

It's been a while since I've posted. The left is a picture of a half yard of fabric I won at one of the Bernina Club meetings that I attended.

The one on the right is a picture of a fat quarter that I got during an exchange at a club meeting. Each person who wanted to participate, needed to bring a fat quarter. Then we passed them down to the person on our left. We were supposed to make something with it, but I still have not used either of the fabrics pictured. Since I have gone back to working full time, I have not had the time or energy to sew much. Sigh.
We just got back from Japan. This photo was taken the night we arrived. We needed to catch the bus from Narita to our hotel in Kawagoe.
The next day we went to Harajuku in the rain. It was the day before Typhoon Phanfone hit and we got very soaked. My jeans were dripping wet. I also ended up buying a new umbrella because I was having trouble fitting my old fat umbrella into the plastics provided by the stores. Each store provides these skinny plastic bags to put your wet umbrella in so that your umbrella doesn't drip water all over the floor inside the store. Each time you go in, you close your umbrella and put it in the plastic bag. When you leave you put the plastic bag into the container provided by the store. We used lots of plastic bags that day. The rain was coming down non-stop.
After Harajuku, we went to Shibuya to see the statue of Hachiko, where it was still raining. We ate lunch in Shibuya at Tenka Sushi. It was nice to warm up with a hot drink and get out of the rain. As we were leaving, we discovered that they were having a lunch time special, 100 yen for each plate of sushi! That made lunch even better!
Back at Kawagoe station, we did some exploring. This display came on a 3 pm. My daughter thinks it comes on a 3 pm daily. Anyway, there is music with drums, a float and dolls about the Kawagoe festival.
My mom was cleaning up and she found this. This was from when I was in Kindergarten. I smelled pretty bad so I just took a picture of it and tossed it. Did you make one of these in Kindergarten? They got a large piece of butcher paper and made you lie down on it. You got traced, then you had to color yourself in. haha. I don't know if they still do this in Kindergarten.
These are string pot holders and coasters. I made for my mom's birthday. I actually went overboard on the coasters and made double the amount. It was a good thing too, because I used them in a Christmas grab bag at the 2012 Bernina Club Christmas party. The woman who got it really liked it. She told me that she has to keep track of them so that they don't walk away.
Well, I have a large black rubbermaid container with my worms in it. It is raised off the floor of the garage and the lid has air holes. One day, there was a small frog in it, like the one we found in the house. As I was moving the paper to feed the worms the frog jumped out at me! After that I decided to get the worms a new home. We went to Koolau Farmers and found this green worm bin. We tried to clean out the black bin, but it so large that we couldn't get all the worms out. Hopefully we can get to it this summer, otherwise I will have two worm bins! I don't know if I can maintain two of them.
I am exploring different ways to quilt my quilts on my domestic sewing machine. There are different Quilt as you go methods, so I signed up for a class at Bernina to learn how to make quilts using this method. The Bernina Club teacher made the samples and teaches the class.

The first two photos are samples of Quilt As You Go (QAYG) projects for the QAYG class I took. Did you know that there was a ruler I had to buy to make this? Apparently, this ruler can be used to make all the other patterns too.
One of my former students came to visit me one day to show me this bag. This was her final project in my class. At the time the project was due, she wasn't finished with it. She crocheted the whole thing. It is also fully lined! She says it is very heavy and only uses it sparingly. I am so proud of her for finishing it. It turned out very nice!
I know this is a really blurry picture, but this is Cindy Walter, a quilter who painted her fabric she used to make the quilt she is holding up. She came to speak at our Bernina Club meeting last year. She wrote a book called Fabric Painting. After she came to our meeting she was on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Timms.

For those of you who are not familiar with The Quilt Show, it is an online Quilting video show, like a tv series, except that they feature quilters and their techniques. I used to subscribe to it, but I don't have enough time to watch all the shows. Maybe I'll purchase the shows later on DVD, but I still don't know if I'll have the time to watch them. sigh.
This card was so cute I had to photograph it. It reminds me that God is in control.

The next picture is of a quilt I made for my nephew Oliver. The backing is minkee and it has owls on it. I found the owl pattern in a magazine for a plushie and used it as an applique pattern.

Then when I sewed it on to the quilt top, my needle was getting sticky. yikes! Well, I ended up giving this to Oliver for Christmas. I hope he likes it. Minkee is so soft!
I was trying to load more pictures, but blogger was putting them in upside-down. I think it took me about six years to finally get it done. The part that I kind of hesitated on was deciding whether I was done embellishing it. I go to the Farmer's Market at Windward Mall and there is a vendor who has all these exotic fruits. Some of which I have heard of, but never seen before.

This first picture is of Jaboticaba, which my mother-in-law used to talk about all the time. She used to tell us about how good Jaboticaba jam is. It's no wonder that I never heard of it or saw it. The sign says it is grown in Brazil. Wow, that jam must be expensive!
This next one is Egg Fruit, a Southeast Asian fruit. I have never seen or heard of this before. The sign says it is highly nutritous, but doesn't tell how to prepare it. According to this website, it is pureed and added to shakes and ice cream. This particular fruit has been displayed so that people could taste it. I unfortunately was not able to taste it because I am on an elimination diet and fruits are not on it. This website says Mamey Sapote tastes like a mix of sweet potato and pumpkin and it is used in shakes, ice creams, and smoothies.
I'm finally posting about this. I made this during the summer for my nephew who was born at the end or August. His parents really like Totoro, so I thought this would be cute. I found this pattern on the internet here. Normally, Totoro is gray, but I thought I would make him in baby blue and white for a little boy. Totoro came out pretty cute.
This large moth was in my room at school when I was trying to clean my room to close up for the year. He was huge! Someone told me that these are getting to be rare, but I'd rather not have them near me!

When I asked people how to get it out of my room, they told me to leave it alone. Then they would ask me if one of my relatives died recently, to which I replied, "no". I looked up the "old wive's tale" on the internet and it said the moth had to be white, so I guess it didn't apply in this case.

I did close up my room for the year... and I have no idea where it went. I also don't know if it is still in my room. I do hope he is gone when I have to go back next month.Suzehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10576443971700537294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1529897135588209636.post-79822128135640379062012-06-23T16:52:00.001-07:002012-06-23T16:52:54.276-07:00Fabric!

Wow! That store is huge! We had nothing like that here in Hawaii. They had an area outside loaded with clearance fabrics and on top of that there was a sale on their regular fabrics inside. The first two pics are of some of the fabric I purchased. I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the fabric because I shipped them home in separate flat rate boxes. I've got to go back there. I didn't get to see the whole store.

One can never have too many neutrals. I bought those fat quarters from Walmart before the trip.
My DD had her senior art show at the Hallie Ford Museum. She had 4 pieces in it about memory. It is about how you only remember certain things.

The pieces are mounted between plexiglass to give the effect of shadows on the wall. The shadows on the wall came out blue in the photos I took.

The first piece is about how she remembered the bicentennial quarter as the drummer boy quarter, but didn't recall the words written around the quarter since she learned about the quarter before she could read.

The next piece is about how she wished all the sand on the beach was snow.

The third piece is about how she remembered the big macs. She always thought they were huge when she was little, but now that she is all grown up, they're not that big.

Her fourth piece is a video tape about the Rugrats and Reptar, I believe it was the movie, but parts of the tape are missing.

The rest of the pictures are of some of the other pieces of at the Senior Art Show.

The one on the wall with the circles and squares was about patterns.

The clay pieces in front of them were about man's impact on the earth with automobile parts imbedded in the clay.

The next one is about endangered birds. They made paintings and paper macho' birds made out of books because e-books may cause printed books to be endangered like some species of birds.

The last two pictures are drawings about how people interact with each other. I just took pictures of them because I thought they looked like Japanese anime characters.
We went to a restaurant in Portland, Oregon called Old Wives Tales for breakfast. I had scrambled egg whites with roasted potatoes, but then I didn't realize that it had spices on it that I might have been allergic to some of the spices, so we ordered some gf toast. I ate the gf toast instead of the potatoes.

We also went to a restaurant called Seasons & Regions for dinner. The food there was delicious! I had the Honey Ginger Lime Salmon and it was sooo good that we went back there again for dinner.
I went to a Bernina Club meeting in April and we learned how to make this pincushion. It's called a Flower Tower Pincushion. If I have time, I'd actually try to make this pincushion.

This orchid plant in our yard was blooming. Enjoy!
I finished part 2 of Orca Bay. Mine consist of yellow/orange strings. I changed the color. It should have been red.
I was asked to help them sew their costumes for their "I Am Samoa" competition at the Polynesian Cultural Center in May. The fabric came from Samoa and it was beautiful. I don't now if you can see the glitter on the fabric, but it was everywhere. So fun! We used the sewing machines in my room at school.
The administrator in charge of the club designed the costumes. The picture of the top you see in the pictures wasn't the actual design used for the performance. The top went through some major design changes after the picture was taken.
In the end, they won some sort of cash prize for their performance, so the effort was well worth it.

Congratulations to the Polynesian Club!
Every Wednesday, I go to the Farmer's Market at Windward Mall to buy papayas and other local produce. The papayas are $0.89 - $0.99/lb. I try to buy the ones from Hilo and the Red Papayas or Sunrise Papayas. They also have Kahuku Papayas, but I hardly buy those because the other two are better, in my opinion.

My Anti-Candida diet allows me to eat 1 whole papaya a day. That is the only fruit I am allowed to eat, so I try to buy enough papayas to last us the entire week, until the next Farmer's Market.

These are pictures of only the first floor. There are more vendors on the second floor. I find that the produce I buy here is fresher than the produce from the market.

The last picture is of the angry bird I made. I found a pattern online and decided to try and make it. I'm wondering if I should make some more.Suzehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10576443971700537294noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1529897135588209636.post-4538218734582246142012-03-31T21:57:00.000-07:002012-03-31T21:57:46.896-07:00Spring Break

During spring break, we had a large water main break in our neighborhood. This large break caused four other small breaks, one of which was in the lane next to our house. We had no water for about a day.

This is a picture of the water wagon where we had to get water to flush our toilets. No water for cooking, drinking or bathing, just to flush the toilets. We filled our bathtub and used the water from there, rather than keep going in and out of the house to the water wagon.

The next picture is of the trucks fixing a break up the street. They didn't get the the one in the lane until about 10:00 pm. It was too dark to take a picture then.
This was at about 5 pm.

We didn't have any bottled water to drink in the house, so I had to go to Safeway to buy some. We only had some large expired bottles of water in the house, so I used those to wash hands. We also went to get some Wet Ones to wipe our hands so that we don't use too much water to wash off soap.
This picture is of the area where the large main break occurred. I took this picture while on my walk. They were working on this one all day and well into the night.

Our water came back on at about 2 am. The pipes were screeching and making so much noise that we didn't get much sleep. It's a good thing this happened during Spring Break.Suzehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10576443971700537294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1529897135588209636.post-42387750635541339412012-03-29T06:00:00.000-07:002012-03-31T21:59:57.587-07:00

She has Alzheimer's and had to move into an assisted living facility. In the process of cleaning, I got her old Singer 301a sewing machine. I held on to it for a year trying to decide what to do with it. She was a very talented quilter and seamstress. She sewed all kinds of things for my two daughters from bean bags to pants. She sewed many Hawaiian quilts. She made us a queen sized Hawaiian quilt for our wedding present and it is on our bed to this day.

Since my FIL passed away, she stopped quilting and has not sewn an inch. I don't know how long her sewing machine was just sitting there and I did not try it to see if it worked.
I probably could have gotten more if I donated it and wrote it off on my taxes, but...oh well. I'm satisfied, Singers are not my favorite brand of machine. I'd be very sad if my Bernina ever died.
